A standard 52-card deck, a cribbage board (or just paper and pegs if you’re starting out), and one opponent. The goal? Be the first to score 121 points (or 61 for a short game). You’ll use the board to track your score with pegs — and trust me, there’s nothing more satisfying than skunking your opponent (winning before they reach 75 points). 😎

🔄 The Deal & The Crib

Each player gets 6 cards. You’ll discard 2 cards each into the “crib” — an extra hand that belongs to the dealer. The non-dealer cuts the deck, and the top card becomes the starter. If it’s a Jack, the dealer immediately gets 2 points — that’s called “his nobs” (or “nibs”). Wait, there’s also “her nobs” — but more on that in the scoring section.

• 15 — Any combination of cards adding to 15 → 2 points
• Pair — Two cards of the same rank → 2 points
• Three of a kind — 6 points (3 pairs)
• Four of a kind — 12 points (6 pairs)
• Run of 3 → 3 points, Run of 4 → 4 points, etc.
• Flush — 4 cards of same suit in hand → 4 points (5 with starter)
• Nobs — Jack of same suit as starter → 1 point
• His/Her Nobs — Jack as starter → 2 points for dealer

Let me give you a real desi example. Suppose you have 7♠, 8♠, 8♥, 9♦ and starter is 6♣. Count: 6+7+8+9? No! Let’s do it systematically: 7+8=15 (2 points), 6+9=15 (2 more), pair of 8s (2 points), run 6-7-8-9 (4 points) → total 10 points. 🎉

When you’re the dealer, you want a strong crib. Toss in 5s, 7s, 8s, and face cards — they often combine to make 15s. When you’re non-dealer, play defensively: avoid giving the dealer good crib cards. “Dil mein rakho, crib mein mat do” — keep good cards in your hand, don’t gift them to the crib.

🛡️ Pegging Defence

Indian players are aggressive — it’s in our blood! But pegging requires restraint. If you’re ahead, play low cards to avoid giving 15s. If you’re behind, take risks. I once came back from 40-118 to win 121-118 — purely by pegging smartly with 5s and face cards.

📈 Positional Play — The 26/27 Theory

Around 26-27 points is the “danger zone” — you’re not close to winning, but you’re far from losing. In India, we call it “beech ka raasta” (the middle path). Here, focus on building your hand rather than disrupting your opponent. Play for 16+ point hands.
